A Scenic Tapestry of Natural WondersThe Nanxi River Scenic Area is a tapestry of natural wonders, woven together by the meandering Nanxi River and the surrounding Yandang Mountain Range. Originating from the Huangli Keng, where Yongjia County and Xianju County meet, the Nanxi River winds its way through the Kuangcang Mountains, eventually flowing directly into the East China Sea. With a total length of 140 kilometers and a watershed area of approximately 2,490 square kilometers, the river is the second-largest tributary of the Ou River, the only river in Zhejiang Province that flows directly into the East China Sea.The scenic area is renowned for its diverse natural landscapes, including volcanic rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and lush riverine forests. Boasting over 50 unique waterfalls along the upper and middle reaches of the Nanxi River, the area offers visitors a breathtaking display of nature's power and grace. The river's average width ranges from 50 meters in the upper and middle reaches to an impressive 375 meters in the lower reaches, creating a dynamic and ever-changing waterscape.
A Biodiversity HotspotThe Nanxi River Scenic Area is a true biodiversity hotspot, home to a rich array of plant and animal species. The area accounts for 82.5% of the species found in the Nanxi River basin, totaling over 1,000 species. It is a sanctuary for 14 nationally protected plant species, including the iconic Ginkgo biloba and Taxus chinensis, as well as 12 second-class nationally protected species such as Fujian cypress, Chinese pistachio, and camphor tree.The diverse forest communities in the area, including red nanmu forests, velvet nanmu forests, and orchid tree forests, represent a well-preserved and typical zonally distributed forest vegetation community. The area is also a haven for a variety of animal species, with 24 amphibian species belonging to 2 orders and 7 families, including 13 endemic species to China.
A UNESCO Global GeoparkThe Nanxi River Scenic Area is not only a natural wonder but also a UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized for its outstanding geological features and heritage. The area is connected to the nearby Yandang Mountain and Jinyun Xiandu, creating a seamless network of natural wonders.
